Plant Turnaround (7th Mac 2011- 24th Mac 2011)

While the plant is in operation, there is a time when a plant has to undergo a scheduled process outage for the major maintenance work.At the same time, as to comply with DOSH requirement, all the machinery and vessels need to be inspected for renewing the COF. This outage is referred to as a “plant shutdown.” The management of a plant shutdown is known as the “plant turnaround.”

I believed that most of us who has reached age at forty experience this feeling. When we go to the market or restaurant, the waiter or cashier will start asking you with this ..." Pakcik,pakcik...bla,bla!!" Then we realized that we are in old man club already. Last few years, may be we still have been called "Bang, bang...”. Worst when you hold your small kid at the hypermarket and somebody asking you "Cutenyer budak ni...cucu ke?" lol...

Several guidelines to improve my memory

To exercising my brain, there are some basic things I can do to improve my ability to retain and retrieve memories:

Pay attention.
Tailor information acquisition to my learning style.
Involve as many senses as possible.
Relate information to what I already know.
Organize information.
Understand and be able to interpret complex material.
Rehearse information frequently and “over-learn”.
Be motivated and keep a positive attitude.

Healthy Habits that Improve my Memory
Regular exercise	Increases oxygen to brain. Reduces the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. May enhance the effects of helpful brain chemicals and protect brain cells.
Managing stress	Cortisol, the stress hormone, can damage the hippocampus if the stress is unrelieved. Stress makes it difficult to concentrate.
Good sleep habits	Sleep is necessary for memory consolidation. Sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea leave you tired and unable to concentrate during the day.
Not smoking	Smoking heightens the risk of vascular disorders that can cause stroke and constrict arteries that deliver oxygen to the brain.

Nutrition and Memory improvement

A diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and “healthy” fats will provide lots of health benefits, but such a diet can also improve memory.

B vitamins, especially B6, B12, and folic acid. They’re also involved in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen. (Best sources: spinach and other dark leafy greens, broccoli, asparagus, strawberries, melons, black beans and other legumes, citrus fruits, soybeans.)

VUCA ....D-Day 2010

Yesterday, I attend The Company D-Day or Deployment Day for year 2010 which had been held at Vistana Hotel, Kuantan. The main objective of this program is for the top management to share and deliver the 2010 vision and the mission to all the employees.

There were such a great, amazing presentations and workshops given by Chairman, General Manager, Plant Manager and respective leaders that inspired me. Here, I just noted one word from the bundle of them.

Plant Manager said :

“Presently, we are living in VUCA environment”

I tried to find the meaning of word Vuca but the result vuca was not found in the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. But, one website notes that VUCA is a military term used to describe environments criteria.

Actually, VUCA stand for V- Volatility, U-Uncertainty, C-Complexity, and A-Ambiguity.

That’s mean the industry are challenged with all the VUCA threat. To survive, we have to change and always be positive. Then, we must convert VUCA with new VUCA. It reminds me that the doctor heal the snake bite with the snake serum ..hehe, make sense also!!!

So, new VUCA is V- Vision, U- Understanding, C- Clarity, and A- Agility.

It was half day program and after lunch we have simple game for team building. Then...at the end of the session, every body was given adidas voucher worth RM170 and one mini ball (replica of South Africa Word Cup 2010-worth RM80)....kira okay la.

Finally, on 10 October 2009, my day with this company has come to an end.

It’s very sad to be saying goodbye to this company and to Managing Director, Mr. Steven. But at the same time I know that I was leaving in good shape and going now for 'greener grass'.

I do want to tell Mr. Steven how much I have appreciated of giving me the opportunity to contribute for this company. I have learned some of the things from you that make me more confident to face for a greater challange in the future.

And for all the staffs - your support, cooperation, fun and laughter, tear and sadness, desire e.t.c.– I think that’s what I am going to miss most!. I would like to wish you all the very best.

Flying Without Wings

Recently, I try to understand what is the real meaning of my blog's title "Flying Without Wings". Then, I asked myself " Can somebody fly without wing..? How to fly without wings..? The answer is impossible. So, why this sentence is used for...? For example, I found this lyrics of the song by Westlife (...Opps! Sorry. I'm not the fan of Westlife,..never, but because it has a similarity with my blog title).

My Weekend...(4th October 2009)

Last Saturday, after office hour I drove my car from Teluk Intan back to Kg. Pasir Tumbuh, Hulu Gua Musang. My journey took almost 5 hours to reach to the school's quarter where my family stays at the moment. It is very tiring but for the sake of my family, I'll ensure that i can meet them every week. Kg. Pasir Tumbuh is located in the district of Hulu Kelantan, about 40 km in remote area from Gua Musang. Currently, about 50 numbers of family are staying here.

Myanmar Workers

During previous Monday Management meeting, MD has made a query regarding the absenteeism among the Myanmar workers for the last 4 months. This matter becomes more serious for the month of September. We have a total of 20 Myanmar workers and 8 of them are in the list of the workers who always absent. Absent mean that they did not come to work without any leave being applied.

We don’t have any problems with the Indonesian and also the Nepalese. They are quite obedient and hardworking. These foreigners are being paid with the different rate. Among them, Myanmar salary rate is the highest. May be that is one the reason why the Myanmar become a bit lazy compare to others.

Anyway, to avoid this absenteeism happened repeatedly, we called all the Myanmar workers for a brief meeting.

Funny thing here, most of them don’t understand Malay or English. At the beginning session, Malay said “macam itik dengan ayam” (duck vs. chicken).We knew that from their respond, they don’t understand our conversation. Only one person, Mint Thu can speak some of Malay words. So, we made use of him as our translator. We tried our best to give the explanations by using body language, hand signal and drawing on the whiteboard.

Our massage to them is very clear:

1. Make sure that this matter is not repeated.

2. If not, they will be sent back to their country and all the expenses will be paid by themselves.

I need a HERO....

Last night, the Supervisor, mandore and boiler man came to my quarters around 1 a.m. They told me that the mill operation has already being ceased due to the leaking of the John Thompson boiler tubes were very bad. They can't rise up the pressure of the boiler more than 150 psi. They already tried to continue the mill operation by supporting with 2 units generator set but failed to fulfill the power requirement.

I asked them "Why can't...last two hours can run what..?” Then my boiler man, Suresh replied in tamil-ay (malay + tamil ) " Itu ayor sudah manyak keluar,.mula-mula satu, lepas tu dua..sekarang hujan sudah mari la tuan!!" I understood what he was trying to explain. So, I said to him "Okaylah, All of you go back to the mill and arrange whatever necessary jobs, I’ll be there a couple of minutes".

I changed my dress and straightly went to the boiler house. Suresh began to show me the leaking area of the boiler. Surprisingly, what he mentioned to me about "air hujan sudah mari" is exactly true.

Actually, I planned to raise up back the pressure of the boiler because maybe they have made a wrong judgment. Anyway, after witnessed the condition of the leaking, I agreed with them.

This morning, our super great engineer, Mr. Sam arrived around 8.00am and shouted at the day shift boiler man, Kumar "Why you all stop the mill?” Then Kumar replied “They stop last night due to the boiler tubes leaking". Mr. Sam not satisfied and asked the boiler man to fire up the boiler again. Kumar referred to me but I said “Let him try first. We see how it will go".

Everybody in the mill knows that Mr. Sam always never respect other people's decision including myself. He can work but can't work as a team mate. May be because he is older, and his service here is longer than me. For me, there is no harm as long as he is doing his jobs.

As expected, he failed in his mission to become a hero today. "Biar Luncai dengan labunya", we prefer to rectify the problems and run the Mechmar boiler.

Me and my replacement

Today, I started my work as normal and entered the mill office at 8.30 am. Around 9.00 am, Chong knocked the door and introduced to me a new mill manager who will replace me afterward. His name Mr. Yee, age of 65 retired from other company. He came from Ipoh, Perak.

He told that MD asked him to come today purposely to see me and also to attend the Monday management meeting. Very experience guy but to me, honestly no so fit anymore to manage the heavy mill like Palm Oil Mill.

I’m not sure why MD willing to employ the retired person…may be due to experiences, most probably..or no choice because at the momoent, the young or middle age engineers not so interested with this company. Anyway, I wish all the best to him and to the company.

Then, Mr. Yee said that he wills formally reporting on 1st October 2009. My last day as stated in my resignation letter was on 17th October 2009. Hence, from 1st to 17th, we have two captains in one ship. As such, I’m start thinking to apply for early release.

Verbally, I have spoken this matter to MD and he agreed with the condition that the replacement of new manager is available before the date. Thanks God, Mr. Yee has appeared this morning… Why? This is because I will start to work with my new company at Kuantan Port Area on 19th October 2009. One day is not enough for me to do the arrangement to move my belonging from Teluk Intan to Kuantan. In fact, I need a few days to prepare myself for new environment …quite stressful also. See how lah….hehe.

On the 2nd day of raya, my wife has been admited to HospiTal Tuanku Zaharah, Kuala Terengganu due to hypertension during pregnancy. When measuring blood pressure at Hospital Kuala Berang, a reading of 165/110 shown that it was exceed the ave.limit. Immediately, she was referred to HTZ.

Then, she was given treatment to reduce the BP back to the normal,..and Thanks God, she made it. Anyway she must take some medicine for a certain period. The specialist also advised that it may necessary to deliver the baby early. ( on 38 weeks of pregnancy).

Just simple... you are a coward if :

- turn a blind eye to malingering at work, or
- let your subordinates come late to work or go home early, or
- tolerate those who feign sickness so that their colleagues can get overtime.

Why do we fear telling colleagues or subordinates about their mistakes...?? Or we have such attitude " i'm not paid to be nice to people"..

Ramadan is the month of enlightenment for Muslims.

It is the month of:

- revelation of Quran,
- reciting the entire Quran,
- tahajjud and qiyamullail,
- tarawih prayers, sadaqah, zakat fitrah e.t.c.

Am I ready for Ramadhan?..Am I prepare to embark on this tough thirty days?

It was mentioned by Rasulullah that there are some people who fast but gain nothing, only hunger and thirst..So,I don't want to be in these category.

Visit to Pamol Estate

Last Saturday, i made a trip to Pamol Estate Sabah at Beluran area in order to look at it and had more better view before i transfer on November 06. I went there together with 2 of my friends using 4WD (Mitsubishi Storm).

Merdeka Day

Today is Merdeka Day and its mean public holiday. Actually I have no idea to celebrate for the day. So, I said to my wife just to stay at home. But my staff and also our neighbours asked us to have a picnic at beach.

Although our house is near to Sahabat Beach (only 1 km ), we refused to go there because.. too many people (we don't know where they are come from)..traffic to beach was jammed since 8.00am.

So, spontaneously, we decided to go to Kahapan Beach in Makuau, on the way from Sahabat to Lahad datu..about 35 km from our home. Kahapan Beach is a not well-known beach..less visitors, but very nice place and good scenery. We arrived at the beach around 10.00pm and spent there about three hours.

Homeless to Harvard

Today, I just stayed at home. After having lunch with my family, I sat back infront of television... switched on Hallmark channel. I pressed 'info' button and read that the movie "Homeless to Harvard" would be played at 3.00 o'clock.

I watched this movie from the beginning until the end. Actually, I was inspired by this true story, ..the journey of Liz Murray life, from homeless to Harvard University.

Summary of the story :

The daughter of cocaine-addicted parents, Liz Murray's life as a child was bitterly grim. There was never food in the house, everything was filthy, drugs were everywhere and the welfare checks were spent before they arrived. By age 15, Murray's mom had died of AIDS and Liz was homeless -- living on the streets, riding the subway all night, and eating from dumpsters. Amidst this pain, Murray always imagined her life could be much better than it was. “I started to grasp the value of the lessons learned while living on the streets. I knew, after overcoming those daily obstacles, that next to nothing could hold me down.”

Determined to take charge of her life, Murray finished high school in just two years while camping out in New York City parks and subway stations. She went on to earn a scholarship from the New York Times and entered Harvard University in 2000. In order to be closer to her ill father, Liz has since chosen to attend Columbia University, where she is currently studying.

Do what you were design to do ..!!

This morning, after having a breakfast, I was thinking why sometimes I felt fatigue, tired, exhaust. My physical turn to run down as well as my emotional balance also was disturbed by unpleasant surrounding.

I read through several articles regarding management, stress and supervisory from related websites. According to the articles, the above matter was related to the early signs of Burnout-exreme tiredness usually cause by working too much-.

But, as a positive thinker, I have to solve this problem before it become more worse.
Sometimes a simple change at work can help me avoid many of the early warning signs of Burnout. So, i need to change...

Wise guy always says:

"Find a job you love, and you will
never have to work a day in your life."

I think my decision to quit my present job is right. Oh well, the grass is always greener on the other side!

Jog

Every morning, I will go to Sahabat Beach for a jog as form of exercise. As a person who always working under pressure, it is important for me to have regular exercise to keep me fit and maintain my health. I usually go jogging for half an hour before breakfast. Sometimes I bring along my kids to the beach.

This morning, as usual, I started my car and drove to the beach. Two of my kids joined me and they were very excited. When we arrived at the beach, the scenery of the beach was very different, not as usual. There was a heavy wind blowing. It made the surrounding very unpleasant. Some of trees collapsed due to strong winds. I saw one fishermen boat was broken.

I felt that this was related to strong winds and giant waves which wipe out southern Philippine villages on 10 August yesterday. It was boosted by a southwest monsoon, wiped out hundreds of shacks on stilts and left thousands of people homeless in the southern Philippines. (TV3 news)

So, I have decided not to go for a jog but we walked on the reflexology stone which was facilitated here. As we know, reflexology is a treatment in which our feet are rubbed and pressed in order to improve our blood flow and help us relax...Syukur !!

Job Hoping

Last week, I was offered by well-establish plantation company in Sabah as a mill manager. At the same time, my head quarters asked me to be part of executives for new quality department at Kuala Lumpur.

Actually, I'm serving to my present company for almost 10 years as mill engineer. But, sad to say that my salary grade just upgraded last year from A5 to A4. Compare to industry avarage, my salary is under par. Normally, after 5-10 years working, one have already been promoted to senior or management post., Right now, I'm doing the same daily task, routine jobs and after all, no job satisfaction. I can't blame my present company not to promote me because no vacancy so far.

So, last two month, I started to send my resume to several companies. Fortunatelly, one of my application was considered and asked me to attend for interview. Then, after 1 month later, I had received offer letter from that company. Salary ?? almost double.

Until now, I'm still not decide yet. Whether I'm continue serving to my current job but stay in KL or leave it and join new company with new upgrade carrier but still in Sabah.

Focus

Last week, i went to kunak, tawau, kalabakan and visited some private palm oil mills togther with my top managements from HQ. We started our trip on Monday and finished it on Friday. ..quite exhausted but very interesting journey.

On the way back to Felda sahabat, i dropped in Lahad Datu Air port and took several photo of the airport. Why..?? Coz , may be i couldn't see that scenery of the airport any more.

As you know, Fly Asia Express (FAX) is taking over Lahad Datu air port and will start operation on Aug 1. Any way, the existing ground handlers currently servicing MAS at Lahad datu (including MAB) would continue to handle the ground operation.

For the time being, the fair remain the same as MAS's but in time to come, fares will go as low as 99 sen...Wow.!! The tickets can be purchased via their website http://www.flyasianxpress.com/ .

Masih lagi pasal mancing di Sahabat. Biasanya kami mancing samada dekat tebing sebelah jeti Sahabat. Umpan yang digunakan adala Rapala. Umpan hidup tak main... leceh. Cuma bila guna rapala ni, nak kena baling sokmo. Sebab tu 1 jam mancing dah penat. Tapi hasilnya kira okey jugak lah.

Fishing at Sahabat, Sabah.

Hi,

Ramai orang suka memancing. Aku pun suka memancing tapi untuk memenuhkan masa lapang sahaja. Selalunya memancing bersama kawan atau anak-anak. Tempat yang selalu kami mancing ialah di pantai Sahabat 16 berdekatan dengan Sahabat Beach Resort.
